Why Your Pool Turned Green — and How It Gets Fixed

September 5, 2026 E & A Pro Pool Service

A pool turns green when algae grows faster than your sanitizer can kill it. That usually traces back to one of three things: chlorine that ran out, a filter too dirty to circulate properly, or a pump that stopped running long enough for the water to go stagnant.

Hot inland weather makes it happen faster. Pools in Escondido, Temecula, and Murrieta burn through chlorine quickly in summer, and a week of neglect in August does more damage than a month in winter.

Fixing it properly takes more than dumping in chlorine. The pool has to be shocked, then brushed hard — algae clings to plaster and will not clear on chemicals alone. The filter loads up fast during a recovery and usually needs cleaning partway through the process.

Black algae is a different problem. It roots into the plaster surface and protects itself with a tough outer layer, so it needs direct treatment and aggressive brushing on the affected spots specifically. It rarely clears in a single visit.

Once the water is clear, the real work is making sure it stays that way: chemistry balanced correctly, filter clean, and the pump running on a schedule that actually turns the water over. If your pool has gone green, call us and we will get it back to blue and keep it there.
